Dave Ballantyne and Dave Morrison - TSQL and internals
Dave Ballantyne is a freelance SQL Server database developer /
designer and has been specialising within SQL Server environment for the past 15
years. He takes a keen interest in troubleshooting and resolving TSQL tuning issues
and also provides training on such matters. Dave regularly contributes to online
forums and is a regular speaker at events such as SQL Bits and user groups
Dave Morrison is BI consultant for Itelligence. Having worked in
the IT industry for around 14 years his main area of expertise is SQL Server, namely
TSQL, query optimisation, indexing, performance tuning and internals etc. Dave regularly
speaks at user groups and conferences such as SQLBits and PASS SQLSaturday events.
TSQL and internals - When faced with performance issues there are many lines of attack. Tuning the engine itself can get you so far, however for maximum effect you need to understand how the engine and how it translates SQL statements into performable actions. This is not a simple task, it is a massive task to deal with a multi-table join and the number of permutations can be immense.
To back up this knowledge, we can create better performing TSQL and understand the
impact that is has upon the engine and recognize the pitfalls and gotcha’s that
exist in SQLServer. Ultimately, there is no ‘best way’ to perform a single task
only many variations of ‘it depends’ , but now we can pick the most appropriate
option for the required dataload.

More/Less
Over the years, there have been many myths and misconceptions have grown around the product, some have basis in older versions and some are just wrong. Continuing to build on the knowledge given so far these issue will be explored and broken down and proved or disproved. Finally we will look to the future and explore SQL Server 2012 and the new functionality that that brings and some of the common uses that we will be able to address.
After completion of this days pre-con, attendees will have a more complete knowledge of execution plans, and how they relate to the physical and logical actions that SQLServer will be executing on their behalf. The attendees will also have a more rounded and fuller knowledge of TSQL and the implications of incorrectly defining a query.

Mission critical data platforms on Windows Server 2012 - This one-day
workshop teaches you how to use the new and advanced features in Windows Server
2012 to make SQL Server deployments even more highly available and resilient. These
features go well beyond the regular default Failover Clustering and Availability
Group options we’re used to using, and will include:

- An overview of what’s new for SQL Server professionals in Windows Server 2012
- Deploying clustered instances of SQL Server with irregular storage, such as mount points, SMB file shares and asymmetric shared storage
- Identifying the right cluster quorum and voting models for Availability Group deployments
- Implementing SQL Server Failover Cluster Instances with databases protected in an Availability Group
- Using highly available and replicated Hyper-V virtual machines
- Troubleshooting availability issues with SQL Server Extended Events
Aimed at database administrators and infrastructure architects, this one day event will build on your knowledge of SQL Server 2012 and allow you to implement enterprise levels of availability on your existing technology platforms.

Denny Cherry - SQL Server Security
Denny Cherry specializes as an independent consultant working with
platforms such as SQL Server, VMware’s vSphere, Hyper-V, and enterprise storage
platforms such as EMC’s CLARiiON, DMX, VNX, VNXe, vMAX, vBlock, Celerra, etc. as
well as IBM’s XVI array and NetApp’s filers in addition to a variety of server hardware
platforms including blade systems such as Cisco’s UCS platform and C series servers.
I have over 12 years of experience working with enterprise solutions in a variety
of capacities.
SQL Server Security - During this full day pre-con we will review a variety of ways to secure your SQL Server databases and data from attack. In this session we will review proper network designs, recommended firewall configurations, and physical security options. We will also review our data encryption options, password protection options, using contained databases, and AlwaysOn Availability Groups security. There will also be discussions about additional measures which should be taken when working with Internet facing applications.
Tweet More/LessFrom there we will move to the most dangerous attack vector SQL Injection including all the ways that attackers can use SQL Injection to get into your system and how to protect against it. The security options for database backups is the next topic on the list followed by proper SAN security designs. We will then finish up by reviewing the auditing options which are available and how they can be used to monitor everything else which we've just talked about during the course of the day.

André Kamman - Powershell 3.0 for SQL Server Administrators and Developers
André Kamman - I'm a Dutch SQL Server consultant. Having worked as a DBA on 400+ instances for the past couple of years. I'm on a Datawarehouse project right now where i find myself using SSIS mostly these days. I run the Dutch PAS chapter , and I'm a SQL Server MVP. In both roles I've been using Powershell a lot. I joke sometimes that I replaced myself with a powershell script when leaving the DBA role, but these days I automate so much that I have to watch myself and not actually do just that :-)
Powershell 3.0 for SQL Server Administrators and Developers - This all-day Powershell training focusses on the third version of Powershell.
Come and learn not only about Powershell scripting and language improvements in
general but also about the cool new and improved stuff like workflows, CIM, ISE,
Powershell WebAccess, etc. I will use real life examples with SQL Server Admins
and Devs in mind as much as possible for all my demos.

Besides a focus on version 3.0 we'll also dive into scripting best practices in general, topics like creating help, working with parameters, supporting -whatif and -verbose, debugging, seting up your environment, etc.
But don't worry if you have not done a lot with Powershell yet, we'll start with the basics and we'll keep the learning at a practical level so that back at work on the Monday after, you can start applying what you've learned immediately.

Mladen Prajdić - From SQL Traces to Extended Events - The next big switch.
Mladen Prajdić is a SQL Server MVP from Slovenia and a C# and SQL Server developer for over 10 years. He blogs at http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/mladenp. He develops a popular add-in for SSMS, called SSMS Tools Pack (http://www.ssmstoolspack.com/).
From SQL Traces to Extended Events - The next big switch. - This pre-con will give you insight into both of the current tracing technologies in SQL Server.
The old SQL Trace which has served us well over the past 10 or so years is on its
way out because the overhead and details it produces are no longer enough to deal
with today's loads. The new Extended Events are a new lightweight tracing mechanism
built directly into the SQLOS thus giving us information SQL Trace just couldn't.
They were designed and built with performance in mind and it shows.

Mastering Extended Events requires learning at least one new skill: XML querying. We will show you how to do that plus things you can do with them that you simply couldn't do with SQL Trace.
This demo and info heavy this pre-con will get you ready for the new way to see what's going on in your servers.
